Why Hire an Indexer?

The index included in the back of many books is largely an afterthought by many readers but can enhance the value and marketability of a text. If your work is intended for preservation and reference, libraries and archival institutions are especially interested in indexed works.

By definition, an index is meant to guide or direct the reader to specific material included within the work. Composing an index is as much a creative and skilled act as writing any original work. A poor index can be muddled and confusing, leaving the reader without direction; a talented technical indexer can produce an index that seamlessly incorporates into the body of the work and reflects the author's individual writing style.

The indexer must be more familiar with the subject matter than the average reader but objective enough to maintain a non-specialist's perspective to produce a useable and helpful index. My own experience can provide both and produce a first-class index for a compilation or an original work.

Sample indexes available upon request.
